Back

Sixty-four meters, atop a strategix hill, Saul listened to the warning chirp of Tentakel's
battle computer. "Incomming missiles.

"I hear you Mable." Saul muttered, the voice always sounded like a Mable to her. "Launch
flares."

The titan's upper torso rocked slightly as the flares lit up the air around the hill, hoping
to confuse the guidance systems on the incomming thrests.

"How's that active scan comming along?" Saul queried.

"Nine seconds to completion."

"Great." Saul's fingers hovered over the launch button for her own guided missile racks, but
at this range...best to wait for the scan. Off to the south she knew Sparky was rumbling
along on Bear Claw, but he was out of sensor range, all that remained on her screen was a
small yellow pinprick on her leader's last location, crossing a river before disapearing
behind a hill-line.

"Haberdasher on Shadow has missed with G.M.3."

"Thank the lords." Saul sighed, still waiting ferverently for the scan returns, "Come on."
Fingers poised over the triggers.

"Attack mode engaged. Enemy titans detected: 2."

"This is not fair!" Saul screamed in frustration, one on one was fine, but this! "Scan
status!"

"Scan complete. Target shows heavy damage to left arm, right leg and lower torso."

Saul resisted the urge to reach out and hit the scanner display. "Well that's probably wrong."
she snapped wryly, "Unless they've taken to bringing half-dead titans to battle. Well, here
goes anyhow."

Her finger crushed down on the triggers sending the titan rocking back as 4 G.M.6 racks roared,
filling the path to their target with projectiles.

Suddenly the radio ear-piece on the teams secure comline crackled to life, "Heya beautiful."
Sparky muttered. "I've got you on sensors. Trying for a link, stand by."

"Good to hear your voice boss. i've got three contacts. Firm line on a Shadow, probably backed
up by two Duellist's or something, I could use some help."

Saul's computer chirped again. "Haberdasher on Shadow hit for 15 total. Left torso
damaged - light."

"I copy that Saul." Sparky's voice sounded again, "I hope those Duellists you're seeing are
the same one's I'm seeing, otherwise we may have trouble."

Saul grunted in response her hands shaking a bit, not as experienced as her boss.

"Scanner link in 2 seconds Saul."

"Roger that, getting data now...Damn!"

Not that swearing was going to help. There were four Duellists out there. They'd been
out-maneuvered this time.

"Boss? i think we've lost this one. Opinions?"

Sparky was silent for a moment, then he spoke with a tense voice. "Fall back. Go evasive, get
right out of sight and head for the river, we'll have to fight it out there. But not today.
If you can pull it off - rendezvous at base. I'm going to try some misdirection, we may not
lose this one completely. Over and out."

Saul threw her titan into reverse, firing two more guide missile salvos to cover her retreat,
setting fire to the woods infront of her target.

"If that doesn't shake them...well then I'm probably dead."

The next minutes were tense for Saul as she ran her titan towards the river and safety. She
kept her eyes sweeping back to the hilltop, praying that she wouldn't see the dull green shapes
of her enemies climbing over it.
